As well as being the newest Aucklandista, I’m also brand new to Auckland. So new in fact, I haven’t even moved yet.
So to celebrate my impending move, I am writing a list. All the stuff you say ‘I should totally do that one day’ – goes on the list. Thanks to my Wellington list, I’ve eaten dinner at the restaurant with Wellington’s best location and worst food (Fisherman’s Table), dragged flatmates on day trips (Somes Island), attended my first sports game (Phoenix) and investigated Welly’s urban legends (the trippy tree).
In return, I may provide vaugley interesting reports back on my list-based activities. So let me know! What needs to be on the list?
The obligatory visit to a West Coast beach, walk down towards Whatatipu, walk way down towards there, particularly during the summer, and particularly during a warm northerly, and particularly when the new moon is rising, and particularly at dusk. Strip off and have a bobble in the waves. MAGIC.
1. Dine in each of the cities – west, north, south and central.
2. Go to Food Alley.
3. Go to Waiheke. I’ve never been.
Goto the farmers markets. Try Avondale, Otara, then hit up Parnell (La Cigale, and the one behind the old Jubilee building) and downtown Britomart’s farmers market.
I second the west coast beaches. Don’t be picky about which one you go to, you’ll want to go to all of them in the end as they all have their own flavour.
I would also recommend North Head to view the city from a different angle. Take a torch and explore as many of the tunnels as you can still get into (I think many of them have now been closed for health and safety reasons.
One little hidden gem amongst the West Coast beaches that not many people know about is Lake Wainamu (officially) or Bethells Pond (my unofficial name for it).
Just before you hit Bethells Beach there is a small car park thingee. Park there and then you have to bash through bush and over incredible sand dunes for about 20 minutes. Then you come to an amazing fresh water lagooney pond surrounded by bush and sand dunes on all sides.
It is my favourite thing about Auckland.
Oooo Mikey! Sounds fab. I might have to mission there before it gets too damn freezing.
Emily – I think a drive up Mt Eden at night is called for too. Take wine and a really warm jacket. I’ve only done the day time thing but it looks like it’d be amaaaazing.
Yes! Thank you all for your suggestions, they’ll all go on the list with little tick boxes next to them. That way I feel super efficient when I get through them.

Nikki, I ate picnics and wine with my flatties up Mount Eden on Sunday night. It was my first time and it was ah-may-zing!!
